Institutions

Since the preparation of my magazine, I always knew that my magazine was going to be a very niche magazine. So when it came to choosing who would publish it, I knew that a large publisher like Bauer would be inappropriate. A lot of niche magazines tend to self publish. For example, 'Clash' is published by 'Clash Magazine Ltd.' By self publishing, they can focus more on their audience rather than advertisers. Also, any profits 'Clash' makes, will go back to them and they will then be able to put that back into the magazine where as, if magazines go with big brands like Bauer, they will take a large percentage of the profits.
On the other hand, there are advantages going with a large publisher. In this day and age there is a need for synergy. Going with a large publisher will make it easier to set up sister products likes radio stations and websites and they could help promote a tour e.g NME tour, Kerrang tour.
So large publishers will help the magazine establish faster. But, if the magazine never really takes off or is not as popular as anticipated, the large publishers can dissolve the magazine with in seconds.
I always had an idea in my head when making my magazine that it could be 'Rock Sound's' little sister. After doing some research on 'Rock Sound' I found that they too are a self publishing magazine. I feel that 'Rock Sound' has become so successful that it is now ready to take on a little sister magazine, my own. Rock Sound and my own magazine feature the same genres of music but my magazine is for upcoming artists and Rock Sound is for the more mainstream post hard core artists. So they will fit in very well together with the target audience.
